The 19th largest city of Germany situated on the Rhine River in North-Rhine Westphalia state. An important borough and was the capital of West Germany from 1949 to 1990. Politically a significant city, after unification it was the metropolis of united Germany from 1990 to 1998 and the capital then shifted to Berlin.
