Bremen is 10th biggest city of Germany and second most populated in North- Germany. Bremen is a Hanseatic city of 550,000 inhabitants of north-west Germany. It is a port city, makes it commercial and industrial hub, located along the river Weser, around 60 km south of the North Sea. Bremen is one of two towns pertaining to the Land of Bremen (Freie Hansestadt Bremen / Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, the membership of the Hanseatic League city) and the other is Bremerhaven. Bremen had a long history of wars and disputes. After World War II, Bremen was first occupied by British forces, who were quick to evacuate following the protocol of 14 November 1944, to the Americans who wanted to also have a port on the North Sea and then placed it in their zone of occupation. This in turn allowed to avoid the absorption of Bremen in the Land of Lower Saxony, which was then in British occupation zone, and led to independence in 1947 the city as land autonomously within the , West Germany, which was also awarded the port of Bremerhaven.

An industrial city with shipbuilding (Lürssen, Abeking and Rasmussen, Lloyd Werft), automotive (Mercedes), aerospace with EADS (Airbus, Astrium), food (German headquarters of Kellogg’s, Kraft Foods, and the brewery industry). Today, Bremen is the second German port in tonnage after Hamburg.

Bremen has a state university (Universität Bremen), a private university (Jacobs University Bremen), School of Art (Hochschule für Künste Bremen) and Applied Sciences (Hochschule Bremen) and many institutes like the International Institute of Maritime Economy logistics, the Alfred Wegener Institute (Polar Research), the Max Planck Institute (Marine Microbiology).

The prime historic sites are located in old town (Bremen Altstadt) which is surrounded by river Weser in south east. The wallgraben which is the remnant of ancient walls of middle ages.
