Essen is located in axial part of Ruhr area of North Rhine, Westphalia in western Germany. Its population is around six lac which makes it as the 9th biggest city of Germany. Renowned for its rich culture and it was the European capital of culture for the year 2010. Previously it was well known for its coal mining, iron and steel processing industry. Devastated and affected by both the world wars.

It is well known sports centre with the one of glorious football stadium and home for the soccer club schalcke 04 and has a very well designed Essen Heidhausen Golf Club.

Like other big cities it has a university and technical colleges, It is the home of one of renowned university offering education in arts, nanotechnology and discrete mathematics, The Folkwang university  established in 1927.

Lake ‘Baldeney’ became a water sports paradise and one can rent rowing boat, can swim, enjoy fleet ship trip or can walk along the fascinating lake surrounded by lush forest which makes it alluring for visitors from whole region.

‘Synagogue’, the worth looking, valuable and ancient building rated as the largest monument opened in 1913. Devoted as the main cultural meeting place and house of Jewish worship, restituted in 2008.

‘Hohe Domkirche Münsterkirche’ is a serene and wonderful old church worth a visit, its octagonal tower situated on the Kettwiger Street. The main building is gothic and it has the 1000 year old holy treasure, the cathedral with its Menorah established by the holy bishop Alfred in 852.

The spectacular and gigantic cinema house, ‘Lichtburg Essen’, considers as the biggest in Europe with the audience capacity around 1250 seats. One can easily reach via public transport by train to explore the latest stuff. The ‘Aalto theater’, One of the fantastic building with its deep anil interior and is the Essen’s opera house and well acclaimed for classical ballet opened in 1988.
