Lies on the Lusatian Neusse River in the Bundesland of Saxony, Germany, it is a prominent town. It is the largest city of the previous province of Lower Silesia.
Now this city connects Silesian and Lusatian, as well as Sorbian culture influenced by the proximity to Poland. This city has a rich architectural heritage like Baroque, Gothic, Art Nouveau, Historicist and Renaissance. In 2006, this city applied to be the European City of Culture for an award. Because of the promotion, Gorlitz renamed “City of Culture”, in order to develop German-Polish relationships and to magnetize visitors from all over the world. Due to the largely unaffected chronological parts of the city, numerous moviemakers have used the spot as background over the years.
This city has major tourist destinations and attractions all over the city. The most outstanding building in the city is the St. Peter and Paul Church, which is an example of a Gothic hall-type church. It built in 1423-97 and the gorgeous Romanesque western portal of the former church included in the building. The main features of this church are the Baptismal font, the Baroque organ, altar, sculptures platform and a stained glass window. The Trinity Church built in the 13th century for the newly founded monastery of the Franciscans. It is the only
church in Gorlitz, which still contains its late medieval furnishing.
Museum of History and Culture is another attraction in the city, which occupies three different addresses, the baroque house, Kaisertrutz, and the adjoining Reichenbacher Turm. Baroque House has four wings round a central courtyard, and it said to be the most beautiful house in the city. A glimpse through the windows of this building depicts restaurateurs at work on the stucco ceilings. Schonhof and Silesian Museum is the finest jewel of renaissance architecture, which built in 1526. This museum represents the culture and history of Silesia between Austria and Prussia, and contains the presentation about Silesia in the 20th century and temporary exhibitions.
Reichenbacher Turm is a gate tower on the western side of the old town on the road. Previously this city was the part of the town’s ramparts, and sheltered the entrance to Untermarkt. The top floor of the tower provides an immense view of the town. The Holy Sepulchre is one of the best and exceptional sepulchers in Gortliz, built in 1481-1504, and very soon, it became a famous pilgrimage.
