Located in the hill chains of the Wiehen Hills and the Teutoburg Forest, the city of Herford is in the North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The highest point of the city is the Dornberg and the lowest place is the Werretal. The River Aa links the River Were in the center of the city. Lippe, Bielefeld, Minden-Lubbecke, Osnabruck and Gutersloh border the city of Herford. Established in 789 by Charlemagne, it built to guard a ford crossing the narrow Werre River. In the history, it administrated within the Province of Westphalia following the Napoleonic Wars, and the new part made after World War II. Now days, it is a beautiful and enlightening city with a large number of fairs, festivals, music concerts throughout the year.

This city has a large number of ancient sites and interesting places to visit. The Werre River has an old 12th century town on its banks, and there have been 30 million years old fossils unearthed there.

There are many churches placed in the city, from which Romaneaque Hall Church built in 1220-1250, and it is one of the earliest hall churches in Germany. St. John’s, St. Jacob’s, St. Mary’s are old Gothic churches.

Town hall built in 1913-16 by Paul Konald in Neo-Baroque forms, and the former town hall, which built in 1600, and reconstructed in 1988. Late Gothic half-timbered buildings named, Remensnider-Haus, and Kantorhaus are a major tourist destination in the city.

The Matra Herford is an exuberant museum for contemporary art and design, and placed in a building designed by Frank Gehry. The Daniel Poppelmann-Haus Museum explores the history of the city.

Two another marvelous ancient buildings are also worth to seeing here. They are locally called Holland 21, which is built in 1554, and the second building is Holland 39, which is built in 1559. Both buildings are half-timbered buildings.

Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie is a music theater, which performs regularly in the city and other neighboring cities. Another famous musical theater is Stadttheater, which provides seats for 706 viewers and it served by visiting theater companies.
