Herne situated in North Rhine Westphalia in Ruhr area; it was small town in 19th century. Like the other cities in Ruhr region the booming economy due to the immense production of steel and coal, helped in growth of the Herne.

The Local History Museum (Heimat-und Naturkunde-Museum) houses in the Unser Fritz Elementary School building, the major portion displaying the industrial remnants, with symbolic statues of a railway man, a bargeman and a miner. The Municipal Gallery (Stadtische Galerie), built in 1896 presenting ancient artifacts and artworks reflecting the primordial cultural history.

Before Second World War Herne was known as the town of rotary hammer drills (Stadt der Bohrhammer) and renowned for its prosperity in mining industry. The Flottmann Hallen displaying the relics of this old plethora with paintings, portraits and sculptures, this also serves as the big cultural dance hall and theatrical performances. The popular garden town (Siedlung Teutoburgia) in Herne was the colony for mineworkers, historical folk tale housing with around 136 houses conserved in its original state. These houses were built in 1923, a fantastic historical development in the Ruhr region.
