The flourishing mining (coal, zinc and lead) industry in 19th century in the Ruhr area and also with the rise of the chemical industry in 1938, led the small village of Marl to a town status. The city of Marl is situated in the Recklinghausen, North Rhine Westphalia, Germany. And now it expanded and covering around 87.6 sq km with population of more than 91,000 inhabitants. The economy of the city is profoundly influenced by the mining and chemical industry, and made the grounds for further growth in technological sector. The city was first documented in around 9th century, and located near the Wesel Dattlen Canal.

The major attraction associated with the city is its ‘Chemical Park Marl’, which is the largest chemical production site in Germany, located on north of the city. It is the major industrial heritage worth a visit. The borders of this industrial city adjoin to the parks and forests.

The ‘St. George Church’ is the wonderful church, located in the ‘Alt Marl’ (Old Marl) which was settled in 11th century by the count of the lower Rhine named as Count Balderich. This church has long history of varied ownership with passage of time.

There is an important historical site in Marl, housing the Grammar School and many sports grounds, the site earlier having the castle which was destroyed by the ‘Duke of Arenberg’, originally belong to the noble family, Counts of Loe. The names are still remembered as the Loe Street, Loemill Airport etc on the names of family members.

The city renowned for its historical museums like museum at Erzschacht display the mining history of the region, the Urban and Local History Museum situated in a water mill in a park display the archives about the history of the Marl and the famous Sculpture Museum Showcase, this glass case museum exhibit the artifacts in showcases and whole museum space is enclosed by glass walls, worth to explore.

The city offers lot more to nature lovers, the ‘Braucksenke’ is the natural reserve of flora and fauna, located 600 m from the large famous mine of ‘Augusta Victoria 6’.
