Siegen is situated in South Westphalia, positioned in Siegen Wittgenstein district in the Arnsberg region, Germany.
The city took the name from the name of Celtic river ‘Sieg’. With population of around 0.1 million regarded as the higher education center of the region and the University town with more than 14,000 students. The famous university houses in the city founded in 1972 is the ‘Gesamthochschule Siegen’ (University of Siegen). The city formerly had the flourishing mine industry, now is the services and administrative center of the South Westphalia and core mechanical and metallurgical hub of the region.
As the many cities of Germany destroyed in rebel of war, the Siegen too devastated in Second World War, but still the city houses the heap of ancient architecture worth seeing. The ‘Oberes Schloss’, the castle first documented in 1259 and was the home to the Nassau family. One of the four Gasholders (Gasometer) of the world is located in the Siegen. This spherical Gasometer is oldest and well preserved in its original framework.
The art lovers can entertain with a breathtaking display of media art, the smallest museum in the world as per Guinnese Book of Records 2000, the ‘Beatles Museum’ with its huge collection of 17,000 media sounds, posters, autographs and many more. In Siegen another museum famous for exhibiting the contemporary art is the ‘Museum fur Gegenwartskunst’ worth a visit.
