The Strandbad Grünau is situated at the left bank of Lake Long and is a gem of a beach in East Berlin. The beach had opened for the public in 1908 and was the first beach where the entire family could bathe together. Most beaches of Germany at that pint had separate bathing sections for men and women. On the other hand, the beach Strandbad Grünau was the first place where the entire family could take a bath together.
The Strandbad Grünau beach is not the most popular and posh beach of Germany, beaches in West Germany are more popular but that is a blessing in disguise as while the beach in West Germany gets crowded during summer, the Strandbad Grünau beach is relatively less busy. It is located far into East Germany and tourists have to travel quite a bit to get there. But it’s worth the journey.
The grounds are well designed with nice gardens and the lawns near the old trees are extremely inviting as well. One can spend a wonderful summer day at the Strandbad Grünau. The very popular Strandbad Wannsee, the beach located in the more posh western part, does not have very deep waters therefore swimming is not possible, but it is in Strandbad Grünau. Strandbad Grünau usually features in most travel guide Germany under outdoor activities in Berlin as well as family and group activity.
Strandbad Grünau underwent major renovation in 2009 and many improvements were made. Besides improving the grounds and lawns, solid concrete staircases were built to provide a smooth entry into the water. The earlier concrete shoreline was removed and it has been replaced with sand to form a natural beach which allows access to water without restrictions. The beach has a beach bar which offers a variety of cocktails as well as music. A section of the beach is also reserved for those who wish to sunbathe naked.
Throughout the beach there are beach chairs, benches and lounges evenly distributed for the comfort of the visitors. While some people relax, others like to enjoy a game of volleyball at the volleyball court which is open to all visitors. The beach is well equipped with dressing rooms as well as showers.
A travel guide Germany often lists Strandbad Grünau under family activities and it definitely lives up to it. Both men’s and women’s toilets have changing tables for children. It has tried to take care of the needs of the physically-challenged as well by building a toilet for the disabled.
Admissions to the beach usually cost ten Euros for a family with a single child and an additional two and a half euro for every additional child. Strandbad Grünau is usually open from May to September from 10 in the morning till 6 or 7 o’clock in the evening.
