Schöningen is on the itinerary of tourists because of the wooden spears found at a mine near the town. The wooden spears dated back to four hundred thousand years ago which makes them the oldest weapons ever found.Germany tourism offers many archeological sites but no site offers artifacts as old as the one at Schöningen. The wooden spears are very important historical proof that even early man had special hunting tools. While some spears designed a lot like our modern javelins found on the site were probably used as projectile weapons, another seemed more like a thrusting weapon. It is supposed that they belong to the Paleolithic age. The spears are the town’s major tourist attraction and it puts the town on the map of Germany tourism.

The town of Schöningen has more to offer than the world’s oldest spears. In Germany one is rarely ever far away from a castle and Schöningen is no different, while visiting Schöningen one can also pay a visit to Scahaningi castle. Besides the castle one can also visit the local history museum, St.Lorenz Church and St.Vincent Church during sightseeing.

Though a small town there is a lot to do in Schöningen like visiting the weekly market held on Saturday mornings where one can purchase souvenirs to take back home. Schöningen is the perfect destination on a pleasant day as there are many other outdoor activities one can indulge in like golf. The lower Saxon countryside is perfect for hikes and bike rides; the gold course has a sauna and pool which can be used to relax. The St. Lawrence golf club is located amidst beautiful surroundings while on one side there is the natural countryside on the other hand there is the old monastery of St. Lawrence. The town also offers one the opportunity to try horse riding.

There are plenty of restaurants and accommodation in the town. One can find youth hostels, bed and breakfast as well as small hotels in Schöningen.
