Brandenburg is one of the sixteen states and is located in the east side of Germany. It is one of the newer federal states that were re-created in 1990 when the German reunification happened of the west and East Germany. The state’s capital is Potsdam and surrounds the capital city of Germany which is Berlin.

History

The Margraviate of Brandenburg became the core of the kingdom that started in the medieval Northern March; it then later on became the Free State of Prussia. In 1945, the eastern Brandenburg (Ostbrandenburg/Neumark) was relinquished back to Poland.

Late medieval going to early modern period, Brandenburg was one of the seven electoral states of the Holy Roman Empire. Alongside Prussia, Brandenburg formed the original core of the German Empire this was the first unified German state.

From 1415, Brandenburg was governed by Hohenzollern dynasty which Berlin was part of being it as the future capital of Germany. After 1618, Brandenburg-Prussia was formed combining the Duchy of Prussia and the Margraviate of Brandenburg, this was ruled by the House of Hohenzollern. In the year 1701, this state was promoted to the Kingdom of Prussia. The factors that helped to the success and the rise of the state of Brandenburg is the ruler’s status as prince-elector and the connections with Berlin, Ansbach, Franconian, Nuremberg Swabian and Hohenzollern.

Geography

In Brandenburg’s north borders Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in the west is Saxony – Anhalt, northwest, Lower Saxony, south is Freistaat Sachsen, and in the east is Poland.

Main rivers of the states are the Spree and the Havel. The Old River is a part of the eastern border while the Elbe River takes a portion of the western border. In the southeast, a no wetlands region known as Spreewald, in the northernmost part of Lusatia is where the Sorbs or Slavic people still reside.

The good thing with Brandenburg is that they have started in 1990 natural protection policies to enhance a well preserved natural environment in which until today they are known for. Fifteen large areas were chosen after German’s reunification, these areas were given state-financed administration and park ranger staff, to work for and ensure the conservation of nature. These protected areas have visitor centers that anyone locals or tourist can take time to visit in.

The capital of Brandenburg is Potsdam and is divided into fourteen rural districts and four urban districts.

Even with the known modernism throughout Germany, Brandenburg is one of the states that concentrate more on the history plus all the scenery, castles and moors. Touring and taking a trip to Brandenburg only shows that there is a lot to be discovered in this state.
