Bremen, The Free Hanseatic City of Bremen or the Land Bremen the informal name or the name used in official contexts is actually the smallest of all sixteen German states.

Geography

The state of Bremen is consists of two enclaves, Bremen which is the ‘city’ and state capital, and the city of Bremerhaven. Both of which are located in the River Weser although Bremerhaven if downstream which serves as a North Sea harbor. Both cities are surrounded by the State of Lower Saxony.

History

Bremen experienced autonomy in 1186, the Free Imperial City in 1646, and a sovereign state and officially labeled as the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen in 1806 after the slowing down of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1811, the city state was then taken over by the First French Empire. The first take over Napoleon Bonaparte only had a preliminary defeat and the city state status resumed in 1813. In 1815, the Vienna Congress verified Bremen’s independence including others like Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Lubeck’s independence as well.

This state became one of the thirty nine sovereign states of the German Confederation. In 1827, Bremen bought land from the Kingdom Hanover were Bremerhaven would soon be established. 1867, Bremen became part of the North German Confederation. 1871 became an autonomous state of new-founded German Empire.

In 1935, in effect to the abolition of statehood of all German states within the Third Reich. Bremen had become a regular city as was reestablished in 1947.  In 1949 the city stated joined what was known then as West German Federal Republic of Germany.

Politics

The government of Bremen is the Bürgerschaft or the citizen’s assembly. In this legislature the leader will be elected by the citizens of the two cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven. It will constitute of the Senate, who is led by a President of the Senate, who is also the mayor of the city of Bremen. The Senate selects its members as well as a second mayor which will perform as a deputy of the president. Other German states and legislature like the Federal Chancellor of Germany there is a difference from the Senate of Bremen. The President of the Senate in contrast does not have the authority to override senators regarding policies. The two cities are overseen separately. In Bremen, it is lead by two mayors. In Bremerhaven, it has a municipal assembly different from the state’s governance and an administration under a hear mayor and a second mayor.
