Germany has some unusual but interesting outdoor attractions which is why tourists from all over the world travel to Germany. The now Berlin Tempelhofer park used to be a fully-functional airport built in the 1920s and is one of the oldest airports of Europe, it was functional till 2008. It was closed down in 2008 as Schonefield
became the only operating airport of Berlin. Templehof is noted as one of the three iconic pre-World War II airports in Europe, the other two being in London and Paris.
The Templehof airport is an interesting structure to study and it was also the historical sight of the great Berlin lift. After the second world war and during the cold war era when Soviet blocked all land based access like roads and rails to western Berlin in an attempt to gain control over West Berlin, it was through air that west Berlin received its supplies from the western powers. The Templehof airport is historically very important because of the role it played during the Berlin blockade; the Berlin blockade was one of the first as well as one of the major crisis during the cold-war. Therefore, when you travel to Germany, do put some time aside to enjoy some fresh outdoor space and visit this historical site.
After being closed the Templehof airport was used to host fairs and other similar events in the hangar. In 2010, it opened as the Templehofer Park and it was visited by thousands of people on that day and many more since. It is popular for outdoor activities like kiting, skating, biking as well as other games. Few places offer as much open area as the Tempelhofer Park in Berlin. One can enter the park free of cost and enjoy the wide open space. Besides people, the park is also used by many endangered birds, insects and plants therefore certain sections of the airport are closed so that their habitat is not disturbed. If you are lucky you might just catch a glimpse of them.
Besides serving as ground for various fairs and exhibitions, Tempelhofer Park is also the sight of the International Horticultural exhibition to
be held in 2017. Since there are quite a few fairs organized at Tempelhofer Park, it would be wise to see if there are any exhibitions or fairs being organized during your stay at Berlin so that you can make the most of enjoying the Tempelhofer Park.
While the park is closed at night on advent Sundays there are special tours arranged at night by experts who are aware of the airport’s history and architecture. One can also view the ‘Hall of Honor’ among other interesting views including a spectacular view of the city from the rooftop.
