Due to its strategic position, Heidelberg was for centuries  repeatedly  hit by conflicts, such as political and religious disputes, especially between France and Germany. Heidelberg GermanyAs much as it now seems a sacrilege, the city has reached the point of being completely destroyed. Since many of its buildings were of wood, almost nothing remains of the authentic buildings of the time. The only one that survived the religious wars  was the building of the Hotel Ritter which is located in one of the most noble parts of the city, nearly opposite to the Cathedral.

Heidelberg is a place long associated with the memory of Goethe. The great German poet and writer loved to go to Heidelberg and spent much of his life walking on its streets.

Heidelberg GermanyBut Heidelberg is more than just a tourist and historical attraction. The city still keeps alive  the tradition as an important educational center. There are several schools of philosophy, medicine and  mathematics  and so this is a place where many young people can be  found  in every  street.

Incidentally, this region of Germany is famous for its delicacies, so be sure to visit one of the numerous shops offering these delights. They are not only beautiful but also delicious, as the traditional  Praline, a delicious chocolate or the least known Schleckerle Essig.

The main point of commerce in the city is a pedestrian  street  that runs through the  old town. There are many shops, restaurants and bars and it is a good place to eat a typical meal, or to eat a delicious apfelstrudel. Going the other way and over the bridge  that crosses  the Neckar River  is one of the most beautiful walks of  Heidelberg, passing through the woods  on the hillside, and where you can see all of the old city.

One of the most beautiful places of the city is known as the Philosopher’s Path (Philosophenweg), and it is situated on the North bank of the Neckar River. Although away from the center and the main attractions of the city, it is an area that should be visit  by those who have more time, because it provides excellent views of the city and the castle.
