Travel to Germany to Enjoy the Castles

While most people travel to Disneyland to look at the castles, those who want to see the inspiration behind them should absolutely travel to Germany. The castles in Germany have inspired the castles in Disney land as well as fantasies of millions throughout generations. German castles attract both children and adults alike which makes these castles major tourist attractions.

The Neuschwanstein Castle built by the mad king by history – King Ludwig II is by far the most famous castle in the world and not just in Germany. It is often the first thing on the itinerary of those who travel to Germany. It is a part of most popular tour packages but you can always plan your own visit as well. If you are the more adventurous type, you can reach the castle by hiking for about three fourth of a kilometer from the parking area of Hohenschwangau or take a bus. If you think enough energy is required for a trek then do keep in mind that you will have to climb a lot of stairs just to reach the entrance of the castle as it is truly located amongst the clouds.

The Hohenschwangau Castle is perhaps the most popular castle in Germany after the Neuschwanstein Castle. While at the Hohenschwangau Castle do take a picture of the Neuschwanstein Castle, the view of the castle is picture perfect. Mad King Ludwig spent his childhood in this castle and it was in this castle that he dreamt of making even more fantastic castles. Despite the wars waged by Germany, the castle still remains in perfect condition. Its many attractions include Hall of the Swan Knight; the hall contains elaborately painted scenes from the tale of the Swan Knight. The former bedroom of the Queen referred to as the Oriental Room was inspired by King Maxmillan’s journey to Turkey and Greece. The most famed part of the palace is the Hall of Heroes and Knights which is truly spectacular in size as well as, ceiling paintings and Gothic columns and architecture.

The Heidelberg Castle is a very popular tourist destination as well; it is the perfect example of a ruined but majestic castle. Its architecture is truly interesting with both gothic and renaissance influence. The palace gardens at the Heidelberg castle is built along the side of the mountains had also been struck by calamity and was therefore in ruins but restoration work has restored some of its lost glory. There are several restaurants on the palace grounds as well which serve local specialties. If you do not plan to stay at Heidelberg but are visiting the castle from another city you can take the Autobahn A5 or opt for Germany’s excellent public transportation system.
